COMMON ROADBLOCKS THAT KEEP PEOPLE FROM BEING TRULY GENEROUS

Generosity can be hard. It’s much easier to hold onto all of our things, hoard our time, and be stingy with our talents. But it doesn’t have to be this way! By examining the most common roadblocks that seem to prevent people from being generous, maybe we can acknowledge some of them in our own lives in order to remedy them.

“I don’t have that much to give anyway.” For a lot of us, this can be a valid argument. Times are tough for some families right now with the cost of living continuing to increase, leaving very little wiggle room in the monthly budget for giving. But even the smallest donations can go a long way.

Also, if you can’t give financially, you can consider volunteering. Besides the time commitment, volunteering costs you next to nothing. Helping out in your community can go a lot further than monetary donations and helps you create a connection with the people you live near.

“I don’t have any time.” With busier and busier schedules, this argument also holds true for many of us. If you can’t volunteer your time on a regular basis, consider donating an entire afternoon maybe once a month or seasonally. Consider forgoing other events in order to be more generous with your time. And always remember to schedule time to volunteer first before filling all of your days bouncing from one activity to the next.

You don’t have to donate all of your time, but perhaps by reexamining your schedule and re-prioritizing, you can find some spare hours here and there for helping out your fellow mankind.

“I’m not very good with people.” Volunteering oftentimes requires interactions with strangers and some of us aren’t good at that. Oftentimes though the less “glamorous” volunteer opportunities are behind the scenes. This can be cleaning shelves at the local food pantry, organizing tables for a winter clothing drive, or even maintaining the yard at a shelter or home for mothers and children.

Volunteering doesn’t have to include direct interaction with other people. No nonprofit runs smoothly without the help of people behind the scenes.

“I’m trying to pay off debt.” We at ARIIX are all about people getting out of debt as quickly as possible in order to secure their finances. You should by no means postpone your debt repayment plan in order to give financially to those in need.

However, if you find yourself in this situation, maybe you can take another look at your finances and cut back in some areas, donating that money instead. For instance, you could forgo buying your weekly coffee and instead donate that money. Maybe you start a carpool and give the money you save on gas money. While you are continuing to focus on eliminating your debt, there are potentially other areas in your budget you could tighten up and start being generous with that money.

“I don’t know how to get started.” If you want to give financially, sit down with your budget. Figure out how much you can afford every month, and then include it in your monthly bills. At the beginning of each month, write your check or make an online donation to your charity of choice.

If you would prefer to give your time, it’s now easier than ever to get connected with giving opportunities in your community. For instance, www.volunteermatch.org is a website solely dedicated to connecting volunteers such as you with opportunities to serve within a given community.

Have you found yourself guilty of any of these roadblocks? They can be all too easy to hide behind, but if you’re looking for that extra push you need to become more generous, it’s time to re-prioritize your life, schedule, and finances so there’s no more excuses preventing you from helping others!
