Ultraprocessed Foods Increase Risk of Chronic Illnesses

Writer's picture: Charles GilbertCharles Gilbert

Quick and easy food choices may save you time, but studies show that they also could be taking years off your life.

“Ultraprocessed” foods are industrially-made foods that contain many ingredients, including additives that make them last longer and look better. (Usually snacks, desserts and ready-to-eat meals.)

Fast eating might be easier, but think of this the next time you reach for that frozen dinner or bag of chips – a diet filled with ultraprocessed foods may shorten your lifespan by increasing your risk of chronic illnesses including cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Read the label next time you’re tempted in the store, and if there is a long list of words you don’t recognize, put it back on the shelf.
